13: Extracting Figures

  1. Download the slideshow EPOcycle.ppt
  2. Duplicate the image, use the crop tool to cut kidney out, and use the remove background tool to isolate it. Click elsewhere to finish editing.
  3. Repeat step 2 for the femur and the red blood cells.
  4. Draw a triangle at the base of the seesaw (vippe), color it black.
  5. Draw a cube (terning) to replace the “Normal blood oxygen levels” figure. Resize to fit using the yellow handle. Insert text “Normal blood oxygen”. Insert a couple of empty lines afterwards to place the text correctly.
  6. Duplicate the cube created in step 5, remove the text and rotate to fit the seesaw.
  7. Change the color of the latter cube using a gradient from blue to red. (Fill->Gradient->More gradients->Gradient fill). Change the right color to dark red. Change the angle to 180°.
  8. Send the red/blue cube to the back and reposition above the triangle.
  9. Create circular arrows above each of the arrows on the background figure, using the yellow handle to adjust the size and rotating them to fit the original figure. Copy/paste the arrows to speed up the process.
  10. Create rounded rectangles at each original textbox. Highlight the rectangle and type a reduced text into each. (You can created subscripted 2’s for the O2 if you highlight the 2 and click the arrow in the bottom right corner of the font box on the home tab - here you can choose lowered text.)
  11. Create textboxes for the text without background on the original figure and reduce the font size. Type an abbreviated text into each.
  12. Recolor the arrows and textboxes to match the original figure.

Bonus task: Animate the slide.

  1. Using fade animations, animate the slide as follows:
  2. Initially, select the Stimulus: Hypoxia box, and make it fade
  3. Follow with a fade-out animation of the “Normal blood oxygen” cube, followed with a fade-in of the rotated red/blue cube. Make both appear “After previous”.
  4. Select the arrow belonging to “Stimulus Hypoxia” box and apply fade in together with the red/blue cube.
  5. Select the Reduced Blood O2 and the corresponding arrow and apply fade in.
  6. Select the kidney and the textbox besides it. Make both fade in. Change the kidney to appear “After previous”.
  7. Select the “EPO stimulates” box and the corresponding arrow. Apply fade in.
  8. Select the arrow pointing to the femur as well as the femur itself and apply fade in. Make this happen “After previous”.
  9. Select the arrow pointing towards the RBC’s and the textbox “Enhanced erythropoiesis”. Apply fade in.
  10. Select the RBC’s and the “More RBC’s” textbox besides it and apply fade in. Make this happen “After previous”.
  11. Select the “Increased Blood O2” box and the arrows leading to and from it and apply fade in.
  12. Select the rotated red/blue cube, click the “add animation” button and choose fade out.
  13. Select the cube containing the text “Normal blood oxygen”, “add animation” button and select fade-in. Change the timing of the latter to be “With previous”.

Bonus, bonus task:

  • Replace the fade animations of the arrows with wipe/vifte animations, just like in the previous “Go with the flow” exercise.
